✳️ AT Workshop — Aug 15, 2026 Juniper
Kishu Juniper complete styling.
Wiring was good.
If you need to wires branch with a stiff copper wire—the weed I ding /wrapping may cause the branch to roll or twist with the wrap. Be aware as nd slightly apply a counter torque on the branch as you spiral wire around the branch. This will result in
Side branches generally angle downward to simulate age.
Remove ALL growth below each branch.
Each branch one pad
Due to the narrow, more delicate trunk, plan for a shallow round or oval glazed pot.
Position the tree in an oval pot away from center.
Styrax
Let it grow out to heal wounds from prior cuts. Concave wound prep from before looks like callus is progressing well, since earlier this spring.
Can be a great Shohin—if I desire something taller then the top sections may need go shorten, if used. Back bud easily, so wait for a bud/branch mid-way on the long internodes as a new leader.
When healing wounds over the next year or two, the trunk will thicken and smooth out the transitions.
The middle bend has reverse taper. Reduce bulk and correct by carving the outer bend. Cutting a large flat will reduce the mass, but may appear flat. Instead, shape as desired, then recess for the callus to grow into.
Redwood Notes
Two schools: (1) ramify by cutting all branches short that will be dense everywhere; (2) build structure first, less dense and more naturalistic.
Two types of redwood foliage (on the same tree)—flat or round, needles radiating out from the stem all aroubd.
Pruning any new growth will often result in new buds or bifurcation. Doing so on FLAT darker, set needles will likely terminate without bifurcation.
Pruning a round frond will more often send new buds and bifurcate.
Learning that redwood growth needs to slow down, to manage bias to grow. Will fertilize less—likely only in fall. Some examples that his roots were pushing up out of the pot.
Overall pruning—if not in refinement and prepping for a show—don’t overthink it and work quickly—what branches should I not prune? Those needing to thicken, or lower branches? Leave those, and the rest cut more quickly.6
Don’t repot often, it stimulates redwood growth as opposed to weakens or slows.
