Trident Work — late spring

  • May defoliation to stimulate interior back budding and let light in

  • Quickly shape silhouette

  • Defoliate more of the upper apex canopy

  • Remove long internodes

  • Remove any large leaves

  • When new shoots harden, cut back again until no new growth (not elongated)—that would be the end of the growing season. May get 3-4 cycles.

Prior cutting placed close to the roots to fuse as a root, then will Prune to be just a root.

Second cutting placed further out as a new trunk.

Elm Cut back

  • Elms bud & bifurcate where you cut, so cut back any leggy internodes. Remove unwanted structural branches.

  • Can cut back to 1-2 leaves

  • When new shoots harden, cut back again until no new growth (not elongated)—that would be the end of the growing season. May get 3-4 cycles.
