Collecting & Propagating (Peers)

Bob Shatsky on collecting redwoods and after-care

  • Has mixed feelings about pumice, that it may hold more water than desired.

  • Has better or as good results with lava (scoria) from a landscaping center—by the bucket or bag. Cheaper.

Bougainville Propagation

  • Bougainville propagate easily, hardwood cutting right into bonsai soil mix. Uses a fine grit or sand (pumice, lava, akadama). He does not use hormone. Don’t let it dry out. A few weeks later it will have roots.

  • He looks to collect even without roots.

  • Shown below the main trunk put into soils and with incremental removal of soil developed the exposed roots shown.
