[Miyagi Bonsai]
Grapevine bonsais (Vitis vinifera) are vigorous climbers that require consistent attention. Keep them outdoors in full sunlight (morning sun and afternoon shade is best), and water them heavily during the growing season while ensuring the soil drains well.
Watering: Grapes need ample moisture while growing to support their rapid growth and swelling fruit. Never let the soil dry out completely, but don't let it become waterlogged.
Fertilizing: Feed sparingly using a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season (spring to early fall) to avoid excessive leaf growth at the expense of fruit.
Winter Pruning: Perform structural pruning in late winter while the vine is dormant to avoid heavy "bleeding" of sap. Cut back branches to 2 to 3 buds.
Summer Maintenance: Pinch back new green tendrils and excessively long shoots to maintain the bonsai's compact shape and to force energy into your desired branches.
Wiring: The best time to shape and wire the flexible green branches is mid-summer.
Repotting: Repot every 3 to 4 years when the root system fills the pot. The ideal time is in mid-summer when the tree is least fragile. Trim back no more than of the root mass and use fresh soil.
