🍁 Shisio Hime / Kiyo Hime Maple, #2503

Round Valley Nursery, Jan 13. $150.

Shohin Plan

  • Can this pump up the lower trunk thicker by leaving a primary sacrifice branch to glow long?

  • Are there any next sections to the trunk that can have short movement and diverted—will this take too long?

  • Chop off all other branches to help develop the next section (but the internode must be smaller than the current trunk, ideally. If from the chop a new leader is defined with a short internode, can select that—but to take a long time.

  • Can the next internode blend with the lower portion before diverting at a different section angle? That would be ideal. (See inspiration below).

May 22, 2026 - Val M.

  • Having left the long internodes of the main branches with foliage above, will not encourage new buds to emerge lower on the trunk.

  • She recommends cutting somewhere in the middle of the branch internodes with collars or buds below to ensure that buds pop.

  • Use cut paste, preferably and if you wish to cap it with a putty to retain moisture, you can.

  • Make sure there are rings or colors or buds below the chops. Keep it in a cool place to not dry out does not need to be shaded cloth but just a shaded area and give it a few weeks to a month to see what emerges.

  • She she Bonsai on YouTube had shared an experience of multiple attempts to get a lower trunk to bud and had more success when doing the chop later in the season May is a good time in June is too late. If done in late June best to wait for the next spring.
