Blue Atlas Cedar

  • Cascading branch lacks the tight movement of the trunk

  • Plan to Jin the upper straight branch—add movement now

  • Do the same for the thick branch on the cascading branch

  • Add movement to smaller wires

Option in the future to Jin two upper branches

Redwood Shohin

  • Not the best time for any pruning—may not bud back where cut

  • Wait for next spring and the growing season

  • Do bury ½ of the clump base

Juniper Clean Up

  • Not much work needed in the garden in late summer, compared to spring

  • Remove outer flakey bark on the trunk, extend the width of some Shari lines

  • Clean up foliage—remove old needles, crotch growth, base of all branches

  • Practice wiring some large young branches

Discussion of Pests & Fungii

  • Locally we see mostly Spider Mites, Scale and Aphids.

  • Fungal infections are hard to identify—ask local experienced gardeners

  • Tree death is common and part of the hobby—even Ryan Neil of Mirai. Don’t let it hold you back.
