Trident Forest Prep

  • Main tree clean up

  • Remove long internodes and shoots

  • Remove outer large leaves, leaving a pair (smallest)—to let light into the center

  • Then go back and remove new long internodes

  • Then remove all large leaves

  • [left=before] [right=after]

Trident Forest Development

  • In Japan, then toss seeds under a bench and just let them grow. As they seek light they will lean from under the bench. These trunks will be collected and composed to lean away from the primary large tree.

  • Let trunks grow naturally with no pruning. Don’t worry about taper or ramification.

  • Once at the right trunk diameter and height, chop above the top node and it should result in an array of branches.

  • Many different designs—may make movement in the top section or a natural array of branches.

Defoliation & Clean Up

  • Can be done at this time for strong aggressive trees like Tridents & elms.

  • Maples are different.

Rocky Mountain Juniper Repot

  • Adams tree, collected juniper In a cascade style

  • Preparing for grafting the next year, the goal is to gain health and can better expose the live by removing bark. If not enough time during the repot, it can be done later. If it was important to know where the live vein is when finally repotting, it should be cleaned and prepared before then.

  • Repotting the year before crafting so the tree is healthy

  • Without choosing a front, chose a number 12 training pot with 2.5 mm high down wires

  • Large size mixed particles 60% Lava 20% hummus 20% Odama

  • Careful of the long cascading branches and fragile deadwood

Plum next steps

  • Continue to let the apical branch, which is a sacrifice to grow Boon and get larger to the size that you desire. Then choose which next bud or branch will be the new lead and cut then.

  • Can choose how to treat the deadwood by carving or hollowed
