✳️ AT Shohin — PBE Display Design

Shohin Stands

  • Styles include box stand, half moon, array of individual stands and jitta.

  • Typically an odd number of trees on display.

  • A standard box would place the strongest and most masculine tree on top. Traditionally, but not exclusively, a black pine. But not a Bunjin or slender or delicate style pine.

  • In a half moon or some stands the center is the focal point—ideal to place the strongest tree.

  • The strongest, dominant tree sets the direction of the group. It may direct towards an externally displayed tree. All of the displayed box trees should also direct in the same direct—with one exception where the left trees point to the right trees, and only the top/dominant tree points out.

  • Use of individual stands, tall or short—thin vertical accent lines or bars are for deciduous, not conifers.

  • The platform of any stands should have wood grain horizontal, not front to back.

  • For the PBE, use the best quality stands. Smooth edges over sharp corners, etc…

Shohin Trees

  • 20cm (8 inch) from top of the pot to the top of the foliage. If too tall, consider angling the tree or semi-cascade. For semi-cascade & cascade, the height is from the bottom of the foliage to the top.
