Shohin Redwood Development

May 11, 2026

Collected shohin trunk/base. Let it grow out, blow out. Cleaned away shoots in the soil or lower trunk.

If a front is selected, pick a strong or ideally placed apical branch and wire it vertical to be the new dominating apex. Emerging from the front is ideal so as to hide the chop, which can be cut angled down the unseen back. Use cut paste.

Selected potential branches and removed redundant branches extending from the trunk in the same spot.

Select branches to avoid reverse taper or swelling in one region—manage growth & energy.

Pinched back side fronds off the desired branches.

Gently wired larger branches, bottom branches angled downward and movement side to side. Upper branches progressively upward. Let lower branches elongate to proportionally thicken.

Over time, thicker branches can be cut back and a smaller side branch can be wired as the tapered extension.

Did not wire all branches laterally, as some are too small and can do so later.
