Thanksgiving Work

Given extra time in between, I found my quiet mornings in the garden.

  • Evaluated and cleaned up deciduous wounds that healed too thick in callus or incomplete. Opened the callus and round burr carved out a smoother concavity for the callus to grow into. Fall should heal thinner than spring/summer.

  • Defoliated deciduous trees that were looking messy and half fallen.

  • Pruned deciduous branches to the first or second bud and removed any long internodes or thick branches that needed taper.

  • Took some cuttings (tridents, elm, quince) as I prune and clean up). In the greenhouse for humidity and some seedling matt warmth, if any room. Low expectations but always nice for future forests.

  • Put more movement in the 3 Black Spruce, put wiggle in branches and lowered their angle. Though small, I will not ignore them if roots allow next year to flourish.

  • Sifted akadama.

  • Putting twists and movement for Shohin potential this early and watch for wire bite in early spring.

Raised bed does not do well for vegetables. I will add more lava and mulch to fill up, then as I wish to ground grow anything in a colander or pond basket I can bury them up to the brim to see if warmth and fine roots will take off. May need to place ground cloth on the bottom to ensure roots fill the basket and not just grow straight down.
