Trident Exposed Roots
Project: sourced from Left Coast Bonsau back in 2023 as twisted saplings, experimented in different soils and containers for growth.
Perlite mix worked well, and root base on top of a felt disk helped with nebari.
I finally appreciated that they will make nice Shohin material. Many or most were repotted in the (late) spring of 2025 into colanders.
This one is an experiment for exposed roots, made a cylinder of mesh and wired it into a small pot. Filled both with large perlite and aggregate mix. Raked the trident and trimmed roots to be long and even. I fed a wire from the bottom, wrapped the trunk and started to feed the roots into the cylinder. Adding soil, chop sticking, and wrapping the wire loosely around the roots. Added small rotation of roots as the wire was tensioned from below. Added soil, chopsticking,
Fertilized and will let grow out. The roots will be encouraged to grow down. Over time the soil will be lowered and they will thicken. Movement can be added, with mild twist or bends, then soil added back in for support.
