Buying Trees (Ben B. Nguyen)

  1. Is it practice material?

  2. Is it for my collection?

  3. Am I buying time?

  4. Is it good enough for a show?

  • [Cedar Rose] JBP — I am buying time, to practice refining a pine, will eventually be show ready in 5 years.

  • [Rick Oaks] Lace Japanese Maple — it was bought for my collection, but if reduced for mobility, I will try to increase ramification. It may currently be nicer in full leaf.

  • Korean Hornbeam (Toth) — older tree to refine this year or two. Delicate in style, not robust. Buying time and hope to be good enough for a show.

  • [Round Valley] Blue Atlas Cedar — I love them and wanted it in my collection. Once branches extend and be trained, over time it can be a show tree, likely smaller than most. May slip pot to a pond basket and by summer drop into the raised bed.

  • [Shimazu] Potato Vine Shohin — beautiful exposed roots Shohin, ready to develop branches and ramification. Potential Toth-workshop group Shohin entry.

  • [Shimazu] Chinese Elm Shohin — well developed Shohin trunk, though small, may be ready to develop branches and ramification. Potential Toth-workshop group Shohin entry.
