Starting the year with collecting
Climbed the locals hills and dug below the soil to find some interesting Coast Redwoods.
Looking for interesting small trunks with taper, but found either more movement or “gum drop” shaped flared bases for Shohin potential.
One small trunk started to corkscrew, then flared to a very wide and somewhat flat shape—only to realize that the adjacent small trunks were joined in an arc. We realized that they were likely from a chipped stump, greater than 12” Dia, the core had rotted out but the cambium had sprouted shoots and small trunks. Required a chainsaw and cut laterally across the base.
Recommended post-collecting care involves soaking overnight with high Hormex rooting hormone (with a small dose of Superthrive. Will pot in a growbox with pumice and let grow out for over a year before further work. Let all shoots grow out and encourage root growth.
